Erotic Economies is a multivolume, multimedia journal first published in August 2010. Our mission is to create an interactive context among a wide array of media and art pieces that generate, investigate and/or represent any kind of economy (in existence and imagined alike).
Our title is inspired by a quote from Lewis Hyde, who investigates how, in cultures that actively engage in gift economies, it is often believed that the receiver of the gift does not merely acquire an object (or an idea...), but a part of the giver as well. In this way, the gift has a transcendental quality, which mimetically binds the giver to the receiver.
What we are looking for is artwork that can help us to envision the bonds and links inside and outside of commodity exchange, including work that can present visionary schemes for escaping production/consumption cycles, portray invisible systems of value, and radical non-compliance with markets. Is anything outside the market? Can art resist capitalism the way it attempted to resist materiality? Is there anything beyond value?
Topics we are concerned with exploring include: gift-economies, money, property, ownership, theft, reproduction, bartering, borrowing, consumption, labor, law, value, counterfeits, black markets, censorship, capital, interaction, and the dissonance between giving and taking in contemporary society.
We are interested in any kind of media: project or performance documentation, short video, writing, sound art, images, online projects, graphs, maps, manifestos etc., which are in some way tangent to these topics.
The print journal will be perfect bound in black and white with some color plates and an enclosed DVD containing audio and video contributions, with a digital adaptation hosted on the website. Participants will also be given the option of exhibiting and presenting work at the corresponding launch.
All copyright remains with the authors and artists, though we encourage the use of Creative Commons licensing.
